A man has been jailed for 11 months for dangerous driving on the M4 near Chippenham.

At 8am on Thursday 19 July 2017, officers were called to a collision on the westbound carriageway of the M4 near to Leigh Delamere services involving a white Mercedes C250.

Enquiries were carried out including obtaining and analysing dash cam footage provided by witnesses to the collision.

Peter Goodfellow, aged 36, of Redhouse Gardens, Swindon, was arrested by officers and summonsed to court.

Goodfellow could be seen on dashcam footage driving his Mercedes at speeds exceeding 100mph and undertaking other vehicles seconds prior to colliding with a Mini. The female driver of the Mini suffered minor injuries.

Goodfellow was also found to have two bald tyres on his vehicle at the time of the incident.

On 29 June, he appeared at Swindon Crown Court and was sentenced to 11 months imprisonment and disqualified from driving for 29 months. He will then have to retake his driving test. He must also pay a victim surcharge of £140.

PC Will Ayres, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “Dashcam footage was invaluable in securing this conviction against Goodfellow. He is a dangerous driver who had no regard for other road users.

“This was a busy time of day on a busy stretch of the M4 – Goodfellow put other road users lives at risk, not just by driving at excess speed but also undertaking vehicles which led to a collision and left an innocent driver with injuries. Thankfully, these injuries were minor although the incident has no doubt really affected her. Looking at the dash cam footage provided by a witness, it is so lucky that nobody was more seriously injured."
