Swindon Borough Council has issued advice aimed at keeping pets as safe and secure as possible during Bonfire night celebrations.

The authority says that although fireworks can be exciting for humans, this can be a frightening time of year for animals.

Its advice is:

- Make sure contact details are up to date on microchips and tags - this is a legal requirement for dogs and cats - so if animals do escape or run away they can be reunited with you as quickly as possible

- Create a safe den area for your pet, such as a covered crate but don’t shut them in it

- Keep curtains closed and turn on the radio or TV

- Keep cats in and consider moving outdoor pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs inside if you can

More information and further advice can be found on the RSPCA’s website.
