Arrest after serious racially aggravated assault outside Swindon supermarket

A man has been arrested for multiple offences following a racially aggravated assault at West Swindon Shopping Centre yesterday - 26 November.

The victim, a man in his twenties, was racially abused and hit with a bike seat by another man near a bike rack on the left side of Asda at around 5.25pm.

They moved to the main entrance where a third man, aged in his thirties, saw them fighting and tried to separate the pair.

The instigator then repeatedly hit the third man on the head with a bike seat, leaving him with serious injuries which required hospital treatment.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault, GBH, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and a section 4A public order offence.

During the arrest, the suspect bit a police officer and was further arrested for common assault causing actual bodily harm.

He remains in custody.

A police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for witnesses who were in the area between 5.20pm and 5.45pm. If you saw what happened, please call 101 quoting crime reference 54240139853."
