The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust say the next phase of canal construction has started at Middle Wichel in South Swindon.

The extension, being built by the Wichelstowe Joint Venture between Swindon Borough Council and Barratt David Wilson, takes the canal further from Foxham Way, up-to Mill Lane
Swindon Branch Chair Chloe Ford said: "This is a very great moment for Swindon and The Trust going forward, as we see the next stretch of build take shape.
"This is the next step towards linking the 2 Wichelstowe sections, which will vastly benefit the local community and the ecological benefits that come with the canal.
"The linking of the two sections by the Wichelstowe JV will see good progress in the next few years, as we see more canal construction. Plus two road bridges and one swing bridge constructed.
"This is a big scale project and is now in full motion"
The entire proposed route can be viewed at www.wbct.org.uk/enjoy-discover/interactive-map and all are welcome to support the project by joining the trust. Membership is priced from £1.50 a month, and members receve regular information plus the knowledge that their membership assists in grant funding applications and proof of numbers when proof of support is required.
