Swindon Borough Council have responded to local residents who are concerned that their food waste is not being properly recycled.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Lots of residents have told us they're worried that their food waste isn't being recycled properly.

"What you may not know is that our refuse lorries have two compartments, one that holds the non-recycled waste and one that holds food waste collected for recycling."

"Crews will tip the food waste caddies from your street into one bright red wheelie bin, which is then emptied into the food waste compartment of the lorry."

The food waste is taken to a company in Wiltshire where it is turned into biogas that is used to generate electricity. It also creates a nutrient-rich digestate that is used as a fertiliser for agriculture and in land regeneration.

Thousands of residents already use the food waste collection service which was rolled out after a successful trial in November 2023. Since this date, 3,697 tonnes of food waste has been recycled.
