A £33.5m project to build a brand new urgent and emergency care development at Great Western Hospital was one of the winners at an event to showcase building excellence in Swindon.
In this year’s Swindon Building Control Local Building Excellence Awards, the urgent and emergency care expansion scooped the Best Non-Residential Extension or Alteration award - not to mention it was the biggest ever investment in the hospital site.
Rigg Construction’s work on an extension at Dorcan Academy was also highly commended.
The awards, which took place at the Civic Offices in Euclid Street, celebrated the best in technical innovation, sustainability, safety and design.
Swindon Mayor Cllr Fay Howard, handed out awards in 12 categories from small extensions to large housing developments. A total of £200 was raised during the evening for the Mayor’s two charities, the Harbour Project and Wiltshire Treehouse.
Builders R J Leighfield and Son won the award for Best Commercial Project, Brick and Build Ltd’s project in Slade Street was named Best Small Extension, while Watson Building Contractors was highly commended in the same category for its Sandringham Road project.
In the category of Best Medium Extension, A P Berrystone Building Contractors Ltd, were named as the overall winners with DWR Design and Build being favourably praised.
Self Build were winners and also celebrated for two separate projects in the Best Large Extension category, and Willmott Dixon were awarded the top prize for Best Social Housing Development for Phase B of the Queens Drive development in collaboration with Quattro Design.
Other winners were BD Swindon (Best Conversion or Alteration to Existing Home), New Dawn Homes (Best New Housing Development), R and R Design and Build (Best New Dwelling), Beard Construction (Best Public or Community Building) and MTI Installations (Best Mixed Use Building).
The winners will each automatically go through to the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Regional Building Excellence awards for the West of England region.
Cllr Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, said: “I’d like to congratulate all our winners and those who put forward nominations for this year’s awards.
“The standard was really high and emphasised the quality of work carried out in Swindon. As a council we want to see quality development in the Borough and these awards do a great job of showcasing the high bar that our local building industry sets.
“We have seen past winners of these awards go all the way to the national finals so I’d like to wish this year’s victors the best of luck.”
