Swindon Borough Council has issued an update on the major improvement work in the town centre.

The subway at Fleming Way has now closed and is being demolished, and a diversion for pedestrians is now in place.

The council says the route was chosen to ensure it was as safe and fully accessible as possible alongside the Fleming Way work and also the work by First Investments at the Tri Centre.

A council spokesperson said: "The work at the Whalebridge junction will include adding an extra southbound lane to enable traffic to go straight on past Fleming Way and up towards Princes Street.

"Work is expected to finish before Christmas, subject to unexpected delays.

"Pedestrian access and access into Unity Place will be maintained but a diversion will be put in place for other vehicles. Bus route changes will also be highlighted by Stagecoach and Swindon's Bus Company.

"The Whalebridge junction is also being improved to enhance the cycle network through the town centre by creating a dedicated cycle lane from the western end of Fleming Way and south on Princes Street."
