A Wiltshire Police search prompted by discovery of human remains near J15 of the M4 is continuing.
Officers are still examining an area of scrubland beneath a flyover near Meadow Lane. They were alerted to the remains two weeks ago by a member of the public, and due to the nature of such investigations, the force says it is likely the team will remain at the location for at least another week.
While work continues at the site, some of the recovered remains are being examined by forensic scientists who will subject them to laboratory tests in order to provide more accurate information about the origin of the remains and their likely age.
DCI Darren Hannant, who leads Wiltshire’s Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “As you are aware, bones have been recovered from the scene of the search. The search must continue in the area for some considerable time yet to ensure we gather any relevant material.
“The remains have been subject to scientific testing procedures in an attempt to obtain material for DNA profiling and Radiocarbon dating; these results will take a number of weeks. Further anthropological and archaeological assessments are also being conducted.
“There is no suggestion at this stage that these remains are connected to any particular case or missing person - although investigators have to keep an open mind.”
Wiltshire Police say Family Engagement Officers are working with a number of families of missing persons in order to keep them updated, where possible, with any relevant information.
Officers ask that members of the public continue to stay away from the site and respect the cordons that have been put in place to allow police to continue their work undistracted and to respect the dignity of the deceased.
