New Domestic Abuse Law closer to reality

A new domestic abuse law, giving victims more protection and support, is closer to being given Royal Assent.

Wiltshire and Swindon's Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson has welcomed the news that a new Domestic Abuse Bill has been voted through the House of Commons and now will be debated in the Lords. 

The news comes after Angus recently gave out grants of Ministry of Justice money to help local groups who support victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. 
Angus said:  "This is very good news that this new Bill is closer to becoming law to help give further protection to victims as well as the police and judiciary more powers to stop the abusers continuing to cause harm.

"Domestic abuse has long been a scourge on society and for many years almost accepted behind closed doors.  Gladly, over the past two decades we have seen a slow turning of the social tide where every aspect of society now challenges this behaviour and recognises that domestic abuse is totally unacceptable.

"The move towards a new piece of legislation which will improve the current law is very much welcomed as it shows that this issue is being taken seriously.

"It’s also very opportune, as we come out of lockdown it is expected that we could see a further increase in abuse and sexual violence cases.  Helping evolve the current law to make it even more robust is a good thing for victims.

"Hopefully, it will give more and more women and men the confidence to come forward to report any domestic abuse – knowing that the police, partner agencies and the judiciary are on their side.   The more people report it, the more we can fight it.

"This also sends a message to the perpetrator that there will be more chance of being caught and punished as victims are supported to bring a successful prosecution."
