A leading small animal hospital treating pets across central and southern England has expanded its expert anaesthesia team in Swindon.

Linnaeus-owned Eastcott Referrals, in Swindon, Wiltshire, has added specialist Matt Gurney and clinician Ana Gonzalez to boost their anaesthesia and analgesia service.

Matt, an RCVS and EBVS European specialist in anaesesthia and analgesia, has moved to Eastcott from fellow Linnaeus animal hospital Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Hampshire and is looking forward to the new challenge.

Matt, a renowned specialist who is co-founder of The Zero Pain Philosophy educational resource for veterinary professionals, said: “I'm excited to have joined the expanded anaesthesia team here at Eastcott Referrals.

“The anaesthesia team play a key role in delivering the high quality of care and treatment to our sick and injured pets. I especially enjoy the interventional cardiac procedures and focusing on alleviating acute and chronic pain.

“I’m looking forward to a varied and challenging caseload and utilising my skills to benefit our patients.”

Matt, who graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2003, is also the current past president of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia & Analgesia.

He lectures nationwide on a variety of topics including acid base balance, pain management, CPR and local anaesthesia and recently contributed to the development of an app designed for vets and nurses in practice on anaesthesia of dogs and cats.

Ana graduated from the University of Leon, Spain, in 2014 and is currently studying towards her European Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, aiming to sit her examination this year.

A post-resident trained ECVAA clinician in anaesthesia and analgesia, Ana knows how important her new role will be.

She said: “It is completely understandable pet owners worry about their companions having a general anaesthetic, particular when the animal is older, very sick or has an existing condition such as heart disease.

“At Eastcott, my principal responsibility is to provide a pain free and safe anaesthesia and I am looking forward to developing as clinician while contributing to maintain the outstanding care provided at the hospital.

“I have a lot of energy for my new role and achieving my European diploma in anaesthesia and analgesia and becoming an integral part of the team to provide the highest standard of care.”

Kieran Borgeat, clinical director at Eastcott Referrals, said: “We are delighted to welcome Matt and Ana on board as we expand our expert anaesthesia and analgesia service.

“Matt is a highly regarded specialist and Ana is on course to qualify this year as a European diplomate, so they are both very valuable additions to the team.

“They are joining an extremely successful team and their expertise, experience and energy will only strengthen our ability to deliver the very best care and treatment to our pets, their owners and our referring vets.”

Eastcott Veterinary Referrals offers expert care in cardiology, dentistry, internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, diagnostic imaging and CT, anaesthesia and analgesia and has its own Emergency Care Centre.
