Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service aims keep everyone safe as 5 November approaches by promoting bonfire and firework safety.

Firefighters say that while people may have set up fireworks displays before, guidance can frequently change and it’s important to stay up to date and be aware of what to do to avoid an accident.

Prevention Delivery Manager Vikki Thomas said: “Fireworks have the potential to be a great social event enjoyed with friends and family. However, accidents involving fireworks and bonfires can be life changing and have a devastating impact on anyone involved.

"Therefore, we would really like people to take the time to act appropriately and safely.”

The service has produced a list of tips to help reduce Bonfire Night risks:

- Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable and check the time you can legally set off fireworks.

- Only buy fireworks which carry the CE or UKCA marks, keep them in a closed box, and use them one at a time.

- Read and follow the instructions on each firework, using a torch if necessary.

- Light the firework at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back.

- Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.

- Never return to a firework once it has been lit.

- Don’t put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.

- Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators.

- Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire.

- Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.

- If you care for any young children, take a few moments to take a look at the fire and rescue service's  activities library at https://www.dwfire.org.uk/education/dwise-safety-stories-and-activities-library/

- Don’t forget to check and be aware of the Fireworks Code.
