The monumental task of lowering Fleming Way, one of the key parts of the improvement scheme, is underway.

Earlier this month, work began to lower the eastern end of Fleming Way to bring it level with The Parade in the town centre.

Approximately 12,000 tonnes of material has already been removed from the road with some of this being reused in the scheme or recycled off-site.

Ultimately, the whole road will be lowered to this level to create an easily accessible location and make it easier for pedestrians to move around, as the previous constrictions of the underpass and crossings at either end made this difficult.

The underpass has remained open during this part of the work, but will eventually be closed and an alternative pedestrian route will be clearly signposted.

Employees from the Fleming Way scheme's contractor, Colas, and Swindon Borough Council took part in a litter pick of the site and surrounding area recently.

Colas has made it a key part of its work to be a positive presence in the town centre and this litter pick is the latest in a line of community engagement events.

The team previously visited local schools to teach pupils about road safety.
