Officers were alerted by CCTV operators shortly before 11.30pm last night (7/4/19) after three people had been seen by the perimeter fencing of Wyevale Garden Centre, in Hyde Road.
At least one person had broken into the site and had been captured on camera entering some of the sheds.
Officers, including a dog unit, attended and searched the site, but could only find a parked van - which contained a number of stolen garden products.
Police enquiries established that this was a stolen vehicle, which had been taken from a property in the Thames Valley area.
Uniformed officers left the garden centre, but two unmarked vehicles remained at the site to keep watch.
At around 1.50am today (8/4/19) an officer spotted a man on the roof of the building, so called for the assistance of the fire service to provide a ladder.
Two police officers then scaled the roof and arrested the suspect.
A 26-year-old man from Swindon has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.
Sergeant Caroline Burt, from Swindon North Community Policing Team, said: “This was fantastic work by our CPT officers and staff, who not only responded quickly to the initial call but then stayed at the site to keep watch for further suspicious activity.
“Our enquiries are continuing today, particularly because the CCTV from the scene suggests there may have been a further two people involved.
“If anyone has any information then we would urge them to get in touch.”
