The challenge - the UK's biggest event of its kind - for children aged 4-11 is run by the Reading Agency charity and supported by nearly all public libraries.

Swindon Borough Council's libraries are supporting this year’s digital challenge with live story times with Anish every Tuesday at 11am on the Swindon Libraries Facebook page.

The libraries team will also be providing craft ideas, a competition, quizzes and online stories. There is a brand new range of e-comics and plenty of e-audiobooks and e-magazines to help readers achieve their Summer Reading Challenge goals.

Councillor Russell Holland, Deputy Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “The Swindon Libraries team have been very busy pulling together an exciting online offer for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, and though they will miss seeing all the familiar faces taking part in the challenge, they have lots in store to keep Swindon families entertained.

“If residents are looking for a fun and engaging way to keep their children occupied over the summer, sign up to join the Silly Squad on the Summer Reading Challenge website and join in with the Swindon Libraries online offer today.”

For this summer's challenge, young readers are being encouraged to join the Silly Squad, a colourful crew of fun-loving animals, and discover the joy of reading.

To take part, children and their parents or guardians need to register online at www.summereadingchallenge.org.uk where they can create their Silly Squad profile and set their own Summer Reading Challenge goal.

Every time a young reader completes a book they can add it to their online profile and leave a review. Once participants have reached their goal they will unlock a Silly Squad certificate.

There will be plenty of opportunities for young people to gain rewards, play games and earn badges on the Summer Reading Challenge website along the way.

People can keep up to date with all the latest from Swindon Libraries on their blog - www.srcswindon.wordpress.com - and through their Facebook page.

The Summer Reading Challenge will finish on Sunday, 6 September.
