Swindon Green Party has called on the Labour Party to give their support to Green candidate Andy Bentley at the next General Election.
The move follows Labour candidate Chris Lloyd's decision to withdraw from his North Swindon candidacy.
Mr Bentley said: “At each General Election, the Labour Party always calls on anyone looking to oust the Conservatives to vote for the best-placed opposition candidate to avoid splitting the progressive vote.
“Since Labour no longer have a candidate, they now have the perfect opportunity to make that happen by swinging their support behind me as the local, progressive candidate to take on Justin Tomlinson."
Mr Bentley said he could offer a range of policies Labour voters could support, including a £15-an-hour minimum wage, public sector pay rises in line with inflation and a ‘dirty profits’ tax, without any loopholes, on the oil and gas companies profiting from the energy crisis.
He also promised:
- A Green New Deal, which could insulate thousands of Swindon homes
- Ending the scandal of sewage being poured into rivers and seas
- Public ownership of public services
Mr Bentley said: “I will fight a campaign with a focus on honesty, principles, and doing what is right for people and planet. When it comes to the difficult political questions of the day, I will honestly answer the questions I’m asked and not shy away from difficult truths.
“I hope that Swindon Labour will take this opportunity to take on Justin Tomlinson and the Conservatives’ economic chaos together, rather than Labour parachuting in another candidate from outside Swindon who will split the vote."
