Swindon Area Green Party has announced its first Swindon Borough Councillor.
He is Cllr Ian Edwards, recently an Independent and previously representing the Labour Party.
Cllr Edwards was elected to represent Priory Vale in May 2024 as a Labour candidate but has since been disappointed with the direction of the current Labour government, leading him to resign the Labour whip on
principle earlier this year.
Having been impressed by the values of the Green Party, and particularly the leadership of Zack Polanski, he has now joined the Greens and agreed to represent the Green Party on Swindon Borough Councill
Cllr Edwards said: "I am excited and proud that the Green Party have allowed me to represent them on Swindon Borough Council.
“After leaving the Labour Party and joining the Greens, my intention was to remain as an independent councillor for the rest of my term.
"But after attending conference and in particular listening to Zack’s speech, I feel compelled to be as involved as possible with a growing, modern, forward thinking, and energetic political party.
“I have been asked why I left the Labour Party. The question should’ve been, when did the Labour Party leave the Labour Party?
"I have been politically engaged from a young age and my views haven’t changed since I was in my teens.
"On the other hand the political parties have realigned themselves and it’s now the Green Party that represent people like me.
“The Green Party offers hope from social justice to the environment. Hope for a fairer society and cleaner natural world. Hope for equality and opportunity whilst living side by side with nature.
“The time is right. Join us!"
Meanwhile, the Swindon Area Green Party have announced that their local membership has been increasing rapidly, more than doubling since January and increasing by over 60 percent since Zack Polanski became leader.
