Local people are invited to stand for election to be a Public Governor at GWH

Local people are invited to stand for election to become a public governor of Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

They are invited to stand for the following constituencies -

  • Wiltshire Northern (2 seats)
  • Wiltshire Central and Southern (2 seats)
  • West Berkshire and Oxford, (1 seat)

Applications for the Governor positions will be open on Friday 16 August, and close on Monday 16 September at 5pm.

The Council of Governors is made up of people of all ages and backgrounds, who all have one thing in common - the continued development of the Trust.

The Trust has 12,000 members and is directly accountable to the people of Swindon and the surrounding area.

It's free and easy to become a member and anyone aged over 18 years old who is a Trust member can put themselves forward for election.

There is no experience or particular skills necessary to become a public governor, however potential candidates should:

  • Have an interest in healthcare and the strategic issues affecting the Trust
  • Contribute towards the future plans of the Trust
  • Act and behave in the interests of the Trust
  • Represent the views of local people
  • Help to develop the Membership of the Trust.                                                                                   

Public governors are part of the Council of Governors, which is also made up of staff governors and appointed governors.

The Council meets quarterly and is responsible for holding the Board of Directors to account.

The Trust's Governors provide an important link between the Trust, local people and local organisations by sharing information and views that are used to improve patient services.

They are also directly involved in appointing the Chair and Non-Executive Directors, approving the appointment of Chief Executive, providing input into the annual plan and representing members' interests.
