Swindon South MP Heidi Alexander has issued a public statement in support of beleaguered Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Sir Keir has been fending off calls for his resignation, including from within his own party, since the results of last Thursday's local elections were announced, and saw Labour lose 1,496 councillors.
In Swindon, a Labour majority was transformed into a hung council with the Conservatives winning 23 of the 57 borough council seats, Labour 19, Reform 14 and the Liberal Democrats one.
In a message on social media, Heidi Alexander said: "A few of you have been asking for my views on the current turbulence in Westminster.
"The Prime Minister has my full support.
"The public won’t thank us for morphing into some sort of self-indulgent debating society, when we are grappling with the knock-on impacts of the conflict in the Middle East.
"We are the Government of a major G7 economy and we should act like one.
"I know people are worried about the cost of petrol, their bills, the cost of the supermarket shop - that’s what the Prime Minister is focussed on this week and that’s what I’m focussed on too.
"Whilst I know a lot of my colleagues will be angry and frustrated after the local elections last week, I think we’ve got a responsibility to get on with the job we were elected to do."
