Swindon Borough Council’s Highways Team have reinstated the commemorative plaque that marked the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh in 1961, as work started on the construction of Swindon’s town centre shopping area.

Last October, the Catalpa tree outside Costa Coffee in The Parade came to the natural end of its life and fell after standing tall for decades. The tree was much loved by visitors and residents alike.

The replacement tree, which is the same species as the previous one, is now in place.

Yesterday (23 June), Swindon Borough Council’s Highways Team finished installing the paving around the tree and also reinstated the commemorative plaque.
