The next stage of the Government's covid roadmap begins next Monday - 17 May.
In a briefing beginning at 5pm, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced changes including:
- International travel can resume, with people permitted to holiday in countries on the green list.
- University students can return to in-person teaching.
- Face coverings will no longer be mandatory in classrooms or for students in communal areas in secondary schools and colleges. There will still be twice weekly home testing to control infection rates.
- Up to 30 people will be able to meet outdoors and up to six people or two households indoors.
- The public will be permitted to make personal informed decisions about close contact with friends and family, such as hugging.
- All outdoor entertainment can resume, as can theatre performances, conferences, concerts and sports fixtures, although all will still be subject to restrictions on the numbers allowed to attend.
- Weddings and similar important family events will be allowed up to 30 attendees.
- Saunas and steam rooms will be allowed to reopen.
- Indoor organised adult sport can resume.
- Residents of care homes will be allowed up to five named visitors, including two at once if they are tested and obey infection control rules.
