Two members of Swindon Borough Council's Homeline team received a Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation at Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service’s annual awards.

Mandy Blackford and Liz Watts received the accolade from Chief Fire Officer Ben Ansell in recognition of their quick actions saving a person from a fire last year.

They sprang into action after receiving an alert from a pendant alarm - a device on a necklace that, when pressed, alerts the team when the person has had a fall or other accident.

Mandy and Liz quickly ascertained that the person had fallen and knocked a candle over, which set fire to the carpet.

Wiltshire and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service were called, but Mandy and Liz arrived first to find the flat filled with smoke. They managed to get the person out safely and the fire was extinguished once crews arrived.

Each year, the awards ceremony celebrates the Long Service and Good Conduct of staff over 20, 30 and 40 years. They also acknowledge achievements that have made a real difference to the Service and the communities they support.

The 2024 ceremony was held at Tidworth Garrison Theatre on Thursday 18 April. Among the guests were the Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell; the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Sarah Rose Troughton; the High Sheriff of Dorset, Anthony Woodhouse; the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Dr Olivia Chapple and and members of Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority.

Nine Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation awards were presented.
