A team whose compassion, dedication and unwavering commitment helps thousands of people navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives has been recognised with a High Sheriff Award.
The Horizon Victim Unit received the prestigious accolade at the Force Awards, in recognition of the exceptional support it provides to victims and witnesses across Wiltshire and Swindon.
The High Sheriff Awards celebrate individuals and teams who make a real and lasting difference within their communities, and the Horizon team was praised for consistently going above and beyond to ensure victims receive the care, support and information they need throughout their journey through the criminal justice system.
As Wiltshire Police's central victim hub, Horizon supports people from the moment a crime is reported, throughout any investigation and court proceedings, and beyond.
The team works tirelessly to ensure victims feel heard, informed and supported, helping them regain confidence and access the services best suited to their needs.
Julia Gay, Head of Victim Services said: "We are incredibly proud that the work we do has been recognised with a High Sheriff Award.
"Every day, my remarkable team makes a difference to the lives of people who are often experiencing trauma, uncertainty and vulnerability.
"They provide not only practical support and guidance, but also compassion, reassurance and understanding when it is needed most.
"Their commitment to putting victims first is truly inspiring. Whether they are supporting someone through the court process, connecting them with specialist services, facilitating restorative justice or simply taking the time to listen, they consistently go above and beyond.
"This award is a fitting recognition of the dedication, professionalism and kindness shown by every member of the team, and I would like to thank them for the incredible work they do on behalf of victims and witnesses across Wiltshire and Swindon."
In 2025 alone, Horizon provided enhanced support to more than 9,700 victims through its specialist triage service, ensuring those with additional needs received dedicated support at the earliest opportunity.
The team also supports around 10,000 victims and witnesses involved in court proceedings at any given time, helping them navigate what can often be a complex and daunting process.
Despite rising demand and significant pressures across the criminal justice system, the team continues to provide an outstanding service, maintaining regular contact with victims and helping them remain engaged throughout lengthy court proceedings.
In addition to practical and emotional support, Horizon also facilitates restorative justice opportunities, enabling victims to have their voice heard, seek answers and, in many cases, find a sense of closure and empowerment.
The award, the force says, reflects the outstanding contribution made by the Horizon Victim Unit and the positive impact its staff have on thousands of people each year, helping victims find support, confidence and a way forward during some of the most challenging times in their lives.
