Swindon residents will be able to book an appointment to use Swindon Borough Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) from 9am tomorrow (19 May) morning.

The Council is trialling the partial re-opening of the HWRC in Cheney Manor industrial estate from Wednesday (20 May) for pre-booked, essential visits only.

Residents will need to book an appointment for the HWRC prior to arriving and a limited number of slots will be available to book at 9am tomorrow on the Council’s website www.swindon.gov.uk/HWRC

Householders are strongly encouraged to check the temporary restrictions, listed on the Council’s website, before making their booking.

Appointments will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. From tomorrow, 1,365, or, five days’ worth of slots will be made available for residents to book onto, thereafter 273 slots will be released daily. Residents will be restricted to two visits per household, per month, initially.

If slots are unavailable on the day, residents will need to re-visit the page the following day for the next available appointments.

Residents should only book an appointment at the HWRC if they are disposing of waste that cannot be stored at home.

Appointments will be available between the new opening times of 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. These reduced hours will allow for enhanced cleaning, social distancing and traffic management. The site will be closed to all residents throughout the weekend to ensure the site can be thoroughly cleared ahead of the following week.

In order to ensure the safety of residents and staff, while managing congestion in the local area, a number of temporary restrictions will be in place at the site. To check all the restrictions residents need to visit the Council’s website before visiting www.swindon.gov.uk/HWRC

Councillor David Renard, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “I am pleased that in a very short amount of time we have been able to set up an online booking system to trial with residents.

“This will enable us to keep residents and staff safe by minimising queueing and ensuring we can continue to provide other vital services such as our refuse collections, which operate from the same site.

“The safety of residents and staff is our top priority and so I would encourage people to avoid booking a slot unless it is absolutely essential. If you can safely store your excess waste at home then please continue to do so until demand for the HWRC goes down.”

As usual, the HWRC will be open to residents in the Borough of Swindon only and visitors will be required to bring a proof of address. Anyone who fails to bring this documentation, does not book, or does not abide by the clear instructions given at the point of booking, will be turned away by staff.

Swindon Borough residents are reminded that they only have access to the Swindon Cheney Manor site and they cannot visit Wiltshire’s HWRCs, such as Purton.
