New pictures of the interior of the historic Health Hydro in Milton Road show the early stages of its refurbishment.
When complete, improvements will include:
- Enhanced changing facilities
- New entrance and fitness suite in the former washing baths hall
- New plant equipment and infrastructure
Cllr Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Placemaking, said: “Anyone lucky enough to get a look behind the scenes during last month’s Heritage Open Days will have seen the great progress being made at the Health Hydro.
“The Hydro is such an amazing building - the stories it contains about Swindon people, their capacity for innovation and initiative, are fascinating and important.
"It’s also key to the town centre and forms part of our plan to build a better Swindon. Not only will it be a valuable resource for those living in the area, but it’ll also be a draw for people across the town.
“The current works are just the first phase of the building’s refurbishment and we’re determined to bring the historic site up to modern standards to unleash its full potential to ensure it can be used and enjoyed for generations to come.”
Earlier this year, work was completed to refurbish the exterior of the building, including repairing the failing roof and sections of the stonework and windows.
This is just the first phase of works and completing this is seen as an important catalyst for future funding bids to restore the remainder of the Grade II* listed Health Hydro, including the Turkish baths, small pool hall, Dispensary and dry-side areas.
