Oasis owner SevenCapital's request for flexibility over any homes built near the 'Snoasis' has been condemned by borough Labour Group leader Cllr Jim Grant.

SevenCapital has asked Swindon Borough Council for flexibility over the size of homes built near the proposed North Star snowdome attraction.

The firm says excellent housing could be provided in spite of 'technically' falling short of national standards.

This provoked an indignant response from Cllr Grant, who said: "I think most people would horrified to hear that the council are being asked to consider letting developers build housing that falls short of national minimum standards – those standards are there for a reason.

"Allowing SevenCapital to do this would be another example of the Conservatives failing to deliver for Swindon.

“It’s time for some clear red lines on the Oasis and potential Snow Dome – that we assess the current state of the Oasis site through a survey to determine costs, that no housing is allowed to be built without legal guarantees that the Oasis will be reopened; and when it does reopen that it remains affordable for everyone in Swindon to enjoy.

“The Conservatives constantly talk of jam tomorrow and then fail to deliver; in May it’s time for change in Swindon.”
