A Malmesbury delegation has completed a historic first visit to Fitjar in Norway.
The trip sealed a Friendship Agreement that honours a thousand-year-old royal bond forged in Saxon and Viking times.
Led by Malmesbury Mayor Cllr Robert Hastings, the trip formally united the two towns through the unique historic connection of King Athelstan, England’s first king, who is buried in Malmesbury, and his foster son, King Haakon, who grew up in England before becoming Norway's first Christian monarch.
Although a Friendship Agreement had been signed online in April, this was the first formal visit to Norway by a Malmesbury delegation.
The journey took on unexpected emotional weight as the delegation arrived in Norway just as the country entered national mourning following the death of King Harald V.
Poignantly, he has been succeeded by his son, who has become King Haakon VIII.
Cllr Hastings said: “This visit has been an extraordinary and moving experience.
"Our bond with Fitjar is rooted in history, but sharing in Norway’s national moment of reflection showed just how meaningful our connection remains today.”
The link between King Athelstan and King Haakon is very well known in Norway, and the Malmesbury delegation were entertained with a performance of a play about the Norwegian king’s life.
The towns now plan to build on their historic royal connection.
Cllr Hastings added: “We are two towns linked by two kings, both of whom had a major influence on their respective countries.
"Athelstan created England and Haakon brought Christianity and the rule of law to Norway. This shared history should make for a strong relationship.”
