A new retirement community at Peglars Way in Wichelstowe was officially opened by Mayor of Swindon Cllr Fay Howard.
After cutting the ribbon to open Locks View, Cllr Howard toured the location with team members from developer McCarthy Stone and other guests.
There were refreshments in the homeowner lounge, along with live music courtesy of Charlie from Scarlet Swing.
Pairing what the developer terms low-maintenance independent living with a selection of superb communal spaces, Locks View will cater for the over-60s with 45 one and two-bedroom retirement apartments which are proving popular amongst local retirees, with 40 percent of apartments already reserved.
The apartments are still open for viewings, and anyone who would like to visit Locks View and take a tour is welcome to arrange an appointment to come and see for themselves, by calling 0800 153 3076 to reserve a place.
The Mayor said: “I was delighted to be invited to Locks View to carry out the ribbon cutting. It was wonderful to meet with the McCarthy Stone team and their guests, and a pleasure to see the show apartments and fantastic facilities at this new development first hand.”
Rebecca Johnson, Sales Director at McCarthy Stone, said: “The team so enjoyed welcoming the Mayor and those who attended the event, and relished the opportunity to finally show off the results of all the hard work that’s gone into the development so far.
"In August they’ll be rolling out the red carpet for the first homeowners to move in, and I know they’re looking forward to showing them how McCarthy Stone can help them get more from their retirement.
"We believe Locks View is perfect for those seeking a varied, yet peaceful retirement.
“We’re already experiencing high demand for these apartments, and we’d encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about the development and its wealth of facilities and services not to delay, and to pop along to see the beautiful new show apartments as soon as they can – our team will be ready to welcome them.”
The Retirement Living development is currently reserving off plan, and will open to residents later this summer. The apartments are conveniently situated close to all the amenities of the residential area, including a Waitrose and many shops, pubs and restaurants.
Locks View is also within a stone’s throw of natural surroundings. Close to the wildlife haven of the Wilts and Berks Canal, Wichelstowe has over 200 acres of open space, thousands of trees, 1.5 acres of allotments and over 12 kilometres of walkways and cycle paths.
There’s a thriving community, with the nearby StoweAway Community Centre offering activities such as yoga, fitness classes and board game nights.
Purchase prices for one and two-bedroom retirement apartments at Locks View start from £253,500 and £320,000 respectively.
Apartments will also be available to rent, with one-bedroom apartments from £1,865 per calendar month.
Renting an apartment is described as providing a quick and convenient way of moving to what may be a more suitable and manageable home, but without the commitment of ownership, and incurring the costs involved in selling and purchasing another property.
Additionally, there is the Shared Ownership scheme in partnership with Homes England, which allows retirees to enjoy the benefits of retirement living without committing to the full purchase price.
For example, customers can pay just 50 percent of the property value of an apartment at the development, with a monthly rent payable on the remaining half.
One-bedroom homes are available from £120,000 with monthly rent of £275, and two-bedroom homes from £167,500 with monthly rent of £384.
There are also options to purchase a 75 percent share of a one-bedroom apartment for £180,000 with no rent to pay on the remaining 25 percent, or 75 percent of a two-bedroom for £251,250.
(Shared Ownership prices are subject to availability. Other shares are available.)
For peace of mind, a house manager will be on-site at the development during office hours to oversee the day-to-day running, with 24/7 emergency call points and a door camera entry system to provide additional reassurance.
More than nine out of 10 customers would recommend McCarthy Stone to a friend, ensuring it has received the full Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation.
McCarthy Stone is the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve this rating every year it has taken part in the survey.
