The first Labour Budget since 2010 has been described by South Swindon MP Heidi Alexander as essential for the NHS and other vital services.

Hailing what she called as a down payment on the change her party promised at the General Election, Ms Alexander said: "By raising the national minimum wage, protecting the triple lock on pensions and increasing carers allowance, this budget will put more money into the pockets of those who need it most.
"It will ensure essential investment in the NHS to provide additional hospital appointments, more money for our schools and extra funding to fix our roads.
"Whilst there were undoubtedly some difficult decisions, it’s right that we’re honest about the challenges and that we don’t duck the hard choices."
The MP added: "Home owners across the country will remember only too well what happened when Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng played fast and loose with the public finances - never again can that be allowed to happen.
"This is a budget of a responsible Government - a budget designed to get our economy firing on all cylinders whilst protecting the payslips of those on modest incomes and creating the foundations on which real change can be built."
