Permission granted for new homes in South Marston and Rowborough

Swindon Borough Council has granted planning permission for 2,380 new homes at South Marston and Rowborough.

The homes will be part of the new Eastern Villages Development (NEV).

The council says the outline planning application, which was submitted by Hallam Strategic Land, Hannick Homes and Taylor Wimpey, will ensure the delivery of a range of new homes, community facilities, green space, allotments, walking and cycling improvements, as well as a new primary school.

The site is north of the A420, and the next stage of the process will be the approval of detailed applications and design codes.

Significant work is already underway on the neighbouring highway network, with tens of millions of pounds being spent on upgrading nearby junctions to ensure they can cope with future traffic levels associated with the NEV.

Cllr Gary Sumner, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Infrastructure, Transport and Planning, said: “This is another significant achievement in the comprehensive delivery of the NEV.

“The NEV is one of the largest planned, sustainable new developments in the country and will bring new homes and jobs, as well as retail and educational opportunities to Swindon, in a co-ordinated and phased way.

“Planning permission for 2,500 homes at Lotmead was granted earlier this year and great progress is being made at Symmetry Park with Amazon’s new distribution site bringing 1,300 new jobs to Swindon.”

The NEV is one of the largest greenfield developments in the country. It will eventually consist of 8,000 homes, new schools, employment spaces and community and leisure facilities.

It will be located to the east of the A419 and is estimated to span 724 hectares, with its eastern boundary reaching the point at which the River Cole meets the A420.

Cycling and pedestrian routes will be incorporated, as will green spaces including a nature reserve, playing fields and allotments.
