Pedestrians are promised a better view of the work to transform Fleming Way when a new walkway opens.
The route, scheduled to open on Thursday 5 December, will take people through the heart of the new road over what used to be the underpass that linked The Parade to the existing bus station.
Colas, the main contractor, has been working with its subcontractors to make sure this route is open in the run-up to the Christmas period to support local businesses and shoppers.
As a result of this new route being made available, the existing temporary walkaway alongside H&M will close. Building work to create a new toilet block with Changing Places facilities has begun in this area.
The Fleming Way crossing at Whalebridge, opposite the Leonardo Hotel, will also open on Thursday, 5 December.
A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: "There will be a short period of disruption as the paving area alongside the health centre is upgraded.
"We’d like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their continued patience while we work to improve the town centre."
Cllr Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for The Environment and Transport, said: “It’s great to see progress being made on this important scheme in the heart of Swindon.
“We know people were disappointed when the route across the road was removed but thanks to the efforts of our contractors, we’re now in a position to reopen it to give local businesses a boost in the run-up to Christmas.
“While the scheme isn’t finished yet, this opening marks the start of the final stretch of works which will see the regenerated area reopen next year.”
