New road safety measures at 19 schools

It will spend the money This year will see it spend the money on introducing measures at 19 schools as part of the School Safe Environment Zone scheme in February.
The aim is to help ensure children across Swindon are safe walking to and from school.
Since the launch in October 2020, 72 schools have already seen a range of behavioural change initiatives, engineering and enforcement measures introduced to improve road safety.
The new measures being introduced across the borough will include waiting restrictions, reductions in speed limits and additional cycling facilities.
This work, both outside and on the approach to schools, includes 'keep clear' markings, single and double yellow lines, flashing amber school signs and five-minute walk zones preventing parking outside schools.

Cllr Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “Being safe on the way to and from school is important both to parents, and the Council. We want drop-off and collection times to be as stress-free and safe as possible for parents and their children.

“That’s why we want to make the areas around Swindon’s schools safe and accessible for everyone. This means introducing a variety of measures including improving crossings, reducing speed limits and improving air quality.

“We’ve already undertaken work at 72 schools over the past four years and I’m pleased to see this extend to an additional 19 in 2025.”
