Last night's figures released by Public Health England showed a massive increase of confirmed coronavirus cases from 469 to 736, an increase of 267, and Wiltshire increasing from 551 confirmed cases to 1,233, an increase of 682 confirmed cases. These figures are split by local authority. Public Health England has now released a statement explaining the rises are to do with historic cumulative data.

The cumulative number of cases in some areas will have increased noticeably due to the addition of data from Pillar 2 testing results. The additional data relate to individuals who tested positive from the end of March onwards.

Professor Debra Lapthorne, Regional Director Public Health England South West & Regional Director of Public Health NHS England South West, said: “Positive cases from testing in the wider community (also known as pillar 2) are now available at local authority level through the daily dashboard.

"We continue to work closely with our public health colleagues in local authorities across the south west to identify and respond to cases and outbreaks as they arise. This daily data has already been provided in local epidemiological reports provided to local authorities’ Directors of Public Health through our local Health Protection Teams, to support the local public health response, including outbreak management throughout the pandemic. This has enabled us as a system to form an accurate picture of the cases across Pillar 1 and Pillar 2.”
