Swindon Borough Council crews tackled 417 potholes in December.

This brought the final total for 2024 to 10,230.
A spokesperson said: "It is estimated that in Swindon, it would take an estimated £142 million to get all the roads to a ‘like new’ condition.
"Limited resources mean that in 2024/25 we’ll spend just over £2 million on proactive road resurfacing work. That includes a recently announced programme of repairs to nine roads across Swindon, including on the A420 and Great Western Way.
"We’ve also and another £2 million to day-to-day highways maintenance, including reactive pothole repairs (£170,000) but also all other maintenance work related to roads, pavements and cycle paths."
Of the 10,230 potholes were repaired across the Borough in 2024:
- 400 were fixed within five working days of being reported
- 355 were identified by our team of five highway inspectors who regularly check 522 miles of Swindon’s roads, all 646 miles of paths/pavements and 76 miles of cycle paths
- 280 defects were reported by residents, 62 of were eligible for repair after assessment against a standard measurement criteria used by many local authorities.
For a pothole to be considered a safety defect, it must be at least 30mm deep in the road surface. These are risk-assessed and potholes that pose a very high level of safety risk are completed within one working day.
