Swindon Borough Council has been highlighting the community work of dedicated volunteers.
Their acts of kindness between April and December last year alone amounted to over 20,100 hours of resident support, and the council says it couldn’t be more grateful.
A spokesperson said: "Even if you’ve only got a few hours to spare, email [email protected] to find out more about volunteering opportunities."
Last year's volunteer contributions included:
- ‘Local Heroes’: volunteers committed 224 hours to help residents who have no support or means of assistance, with one-off tasks. This could involve driving someone to a hospital appointment, helping set up internet shopping, cutting back an overhanging hedge or walking a much-loved dog while the owner recovers from an operation
- ‘Forget Me Not Bakers’: volunteers baked 130 birthday cakes for residents who normally have no-one to celebrate their birthday or could do with a bit of extra support and positivity
- Telephone befrienders spent over 551 hours chatting to isolated residents
- Live Well Activators dedicated 297 hours to help improve residents' physical activity
- Live Well Knitters spent 396 hours weaving blankets and draft excluders
- Swindon Circles clocked up 4,350 hours providing face-to-face befriending support
