The team at Swindon's Richard Jefferies Museum are inviting Swindon people to join in with its Apple Day celebration weekend.

The electric car that will provide the apple press this year

Across Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September, Apple Day is being celebrated at the Richard Jefferies Museum.

Thousands of apples will be pressed, but with a sustainable twist - the vintage apple press will be powered by a brand new electric car.

Running since 2017, this popular event celebrating the natural treasure that literally ‘grows on trees’, runs from midday until 5pm on both days.

The free-to-enter weekend of celebrations will include:

  • Live music from Monty’s Cat and Musicalitea
  • Wordplay from Swindon’s Community Poet, Tony Hillier
  • Stalls from local producers
  • A composting workshop from Bristol’s Sara Venn
  • A fungi foraging trip
  • Talks about gardening and looking after money in more sustainable ways
  • Apple juice and cider for sale
  • Cream teas with jam (made from mulberries grown in the museum’s garden)

As in previous years, the apple pressing will be done by Colin Hatch and his team from Hatch Heritage Engineering using a huge old mechanical crusher and press, but as part of the museum’s ‘Small Change’ season, exploring how people can be a bit more sustainable, the usual petrol engine is being replaced by a shiny new electric Hyundai Ioniq 5, supplied by Swindon’s Pebley Beach dealership.

Museum director, Mike Pringle, said: “We have had an amazing month so far, with dozens of events, visits from local politicians,  talks all over Swindon, art, music, history, sports, and thousands of people enjoying it all.

"This is our final ‘summer’ weekend, and we are looking forward to a fantastic finale to what has been a great year following the upset and confusion of the pandemic. And, guess what, we are now planning for next year, which will be the 175th anniversary of Jefferies’ birth. Watch this space!”
