There was standing room only at All Saints in Lydiard Millicent when parishioners also gathered for the final service of vicar and wife team Revs Tudor and Tricia Roberts.
Some 98 people packed the church a week after it reopened in time for their leaving service.
The husband and wife priests came to the Swindon area from Essex in September 2007.
“Both our children were then primary aged,” Tudor said, “Though initially finding the change with Essex hard, we all settled down.
"We have loved doing schools work in local primary schools and we have loved preaching in churches across Swindon.
“We have noticed changes. When we arrived there were a number of people who had their rural roots very deep in North Wiltshire and many who had historical connections with the GWR Railway Works.
"Many of those people have now died and the rural connections have become more tenuous. In recent years, we have enjoyed welcoming parishioners from across the UK and around the world.
“We leave with good memories of living in one of the most beautiful parts of the world and enjoying one of the friendliest places in the world, Swindon.
"Here we have rediscovered that God is both the God of surprises and that He is faithful.”
The affection with which Revs Tudor and Tricia have been held was clear from a second packed event after the service. Lydiard Millicent Parish Hall was filled with church members and local residents who came to thank them for their service and enjoy a hog roast lunch.
Church wardens John Halstead and Andrew Roberts presented Tudor with gifts on the church’s behalf.
Nicky Iddon, a member of All Saints Parochial Church Council, said: "Tudor and Tricia will be deeply missed—not only by those who attended All Saints Church but also by the countless children they have inspired through their teaching and engagement in a wide range of activities.
"Their dedication has enriched our community through courses, away days, creative worship, and, most importantly, the sincerity of their faith. We are incredibly grateful for all they have given and wish them every blessing for the future."
From Lydiard Millicent, Revs Roberts are moving to Plymouth. In retirement, Tudor plans to take some services on a voluntary basis and develop his hobby of painting hobby while Tricia is looking to complete training as a spiritual director.
