Swindon Borough Council releases updated information regarding its plans for the Kimmerfields brownfield area by Fleming Way.
The Council says those that have passed by Fleming Way recently will have seen Zurich’s new headquarters is well on the way to be completed. Individuals may also have wondered what lies behind the grey hoarding that completes the remainder of the 20-acre site.
Known as Kimmerfields, the Council says this brownfield land has sat largely empty for many years due to the cost of bringing it back into use.
In order to attract commercial investment in new amenities, office space and homes, the Swindon Towns Fund Board, of which the Council is a member, submitted a successful business case for £6m to the Government to help unlock the commercial viability of the site.
The Council believe Kimmerfields has the potential to generate an additional £44m of economic benefit over the next 25 years to Swindon’s local economy.
Overall, £16.5m is being invested to put in utilities, create a new access road and roundabout from Corporation Street, build new estate roads, and carry out landscaping and improvements to the public realm and green space.
Of the £16.5m, £9.5m is being provided by the Council with a further £1m having already been secured from the Government.
The first phase of work will get underway this year. The snowball effect is expected to attract fresh private sector investment over the next 10 years in:
- 100,000 sq ft of high quality office space
- Up to 450 homes
- A Cultural Quarter featuring a new theatre, media arts centre and art pavilion.
