Talented musicians at Highworth Warneford School have raised £121 for Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service (SDASS).

The money will help to support families fleeing domestic abuse in the Swindon area.

A special free lunchtime concert was held by Double Helix, a rock band of Year 10 pupils including vocalists Ruby and Evie; Adiyath, Alessandro and Alex on guitars; Albert on drums and Jhomer and Archer on bass.

In addition to the lunchtime concert, generous attendees dropped donations for SDASS into buckets at two school-wide shows open to pupils and their families.

It was vocalist Ruby’s idea to fundraise for the local charity.  James Hanson, Head of Music at Highworth Warneford School, explained: “We hold a lot of charity concerts here at Warneford and when Ruby asked to dedicate a gig to SDASS we were very happy to help.

“Music is a big thing at the school, we hold two or three gigs a term as well as a big annual concert, and most of our performances have a charity attached to them.

"Anyone can play at one of our gigs, from our more nervous Year 7 performers to our experienced Year 11s, and we have a great range of styles too, from classical and rock to musical theatre.

“The music department is very busy but there are lots of opportunities for pupils; we have 15 instrumental teachers who provide lessons on a wide choice of instruments, including the violin, trumpet, flute and even the harp.”

Mr Hanson presented the cheque to Charlotte Gibbon, Victim Services Manager at SDASS, who said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to the pupils and families at Highworth Warneford who donated their money at these concerts.

"Donations like these go a long way to make a difference to the families we support in the refuge and in the community and helping them escape and recover from domestic abuse.”

Double Helix will be playing at the WrdeUp Festival on 6 July.  Vocalist Ruby will also be performing at the Highworth May Day event on 4 May.
