Great Western Hospital have announced that the sensory room, which is located on the Children’s Emergency Unit, has officially opened.
Designed with input from local school children and young adults, the sensory room is a safe and comfortable space where younger patients with additional or complex needs, such as autism or a learning disability, can wait and be treated away from the bustle of the main department.
The sensory room has padded walls and seating, visual sensory toys and equipment and calming tones which depict nature.
The final designs were chosen, in part, by the young adults who attend the Stratton St Margaret Youth Club.
The 33.5 million urgent and emergency care expansion opened to the public in the autumn of 2024.
The dedicated Children’s Emergency Unit officially opened its doors on 6 November 2024. The new unit has 13 cubicles, two high acuity bays and one resuscitation bay. It also includes a baby and breastfeeding room.
