People in South Swindon are being asked to lend a hand in planting 600 trees.
The project, funded by Swindon-based Nationwide Building Society and heating systems manufacturer Vaillant, is part of the national Tiny Forest ecological scheme.
The session, which will see a Tiny Forest planted in an area no bigger than a tennis court, will be held on Saturday, 5 March in Buckhurst Field, Walcot.
Nearby is Nationwide’s new environmentally-conscious development at Oakfield, which will be heated by specialist Vaillant pumps.
As well as participating in the planting of the Tiny Forest, which is being delivered in collaboration with South Swindon Parish Council, residents have also been involved in the selection of the site and its design, which will be in the shape of a semi-circle to mirror an amphitheatre.
Cllr Chris Watts, Chair of South Swindon Parish Council, said: “We are really pleased to be working with Nationwide and Vaillant to bring a Tiny Forest to Buckhurst field.
"The Tiny Forest is being planted near to the future community of Oakfield. We hope it will become a unique feature that people from across Swindon will visit.”
The Tiny Forest will form part of a green corridor in the area, designed to enhance biodiversity and increase residents’ access to green spaces within an urban area. Made up of more than 600 native trees, the Tiny Forest is intended to provide a valuable space to local schools and community groups to learn about the environment.
Representatives from both Nationwide Building Society and Vaillant will be on hand on the planting day to speak with residents and answer any questions they have regarding the Tiny Forest and Oakfield development.
Steve Cipriano, Commercial Director at Vaillant, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting Nationwide Building Society in co-funding a Tiny Forest on Buckhurst Field. Sustainability is a key focus for our business, and we are keen to support projects that align with this ambition, which not only use sustainable products, such as low carbon heating solutions, but also provide the local community with access to green spaces.
“This is the second Tiny Forest we have been involved in creating, and we would love to see as many local people join us on the day to help with planting. We’re really looking forward to seeing the positive impact it has on both nature and the residents for generations to come.”
Katherine Quigley, Social Investment Manager at Nationwide, said: “The Tiny Forest is a unique way in which we can support the biodiversity of our urban spaces. Neighbouring our eco-friendly development at Oakfield, the forest is another way in which the local community can connect to their local environment in an immersive way.
"It will provide local schools in the community with an outdoor classroom to help young people learn more about their environment, biodiversity and climate change.”
