A man has been jailed for perverting the course of justice after lying to officers about his identity after being pulled over for speeding.
On June 19, 2022, Jahad Hussain, 25, of Capel Crescent, Newport, was stopped on the M4 after being suspected of driving at more than the legal speed limit between junctions 15 and 16.
Hussain was disqualified from driving and gave a relative’s details as his own. The relative denied being involved but refused to identify the suspect.
Through intelligence tools, officers were able to identify Hussain as the suspect. This was then confirmed through the help of Gwent Police, who were able to identify Hussain from the body worn video.
Hussain was subsequently charged with driving while disqualified and perverting the course of justice.
At a hearing on Friday, June 14, Hussain pleaded guilty. He was jailed for six months for driving while disqualified and perverting the course of justice.
He was also banned from driving for 35 months.
Roads Policing Officer Paul Brewster said: “Not only was Hussain already disqualified from driving when he was pulled over, he lied to officers about his identity and tried to blame it on a relative instead.
“This is a very serious offence and amounts to perverting the course of justice.
“This is where a defendant lies or acts to stop the true facts of an incident being established in order to avoid punishment or to get the wrong person punished.
“I’m pleased that the courts have recognised the severity of the offence by giving Hussain a custodial sentence.
“I’d also like to thank Gwent Police for their support in the investigation.”
