The South Swindon Parish Council are passing on their congratulations to Cllr Domingos Dias who has recently been co-opted into its team.

Cllr Dias was co-opted last Tuesday, at Swindon Borough Council's Full Council Meeting.

Parish councillors said they were impressed with all three of the candidates for this co-option, but that Cllr Dias was chosen as the preferred candidate.

Cllr Dias will now serve as a Central Ward Parish Councillor until 4 May, the day of the local election, when all councillors will be up for re-election.

Cllr Dias gave the following speech to the parish councillors:

“Councillors, officers and members of the public, my name is Domingos Dias and I have been a resident of the town, and indeed the parish, for 13 years living in the central area.

"I work in the Marks and Spencer distribution centre and I am a union shop steward for over 250 fellow employees where I help and represent many people in the Central Ward. I have also worked with local councillors on many issues, including fly tipping and litter picking. In the past I managed to secure a CCTV camera in an area that had an issue with fly tipping and this was very helpful.

"It has been great working with local councillors over the years and seeing how dedicated and knowledgeable they are in resolving problems and working to make our area a better place.

"Since the Parish Council has been in existence, we have seen many improvements in the area, with increased litter picking, and fly tip collection, saving Broadgreen Community Centre from closing, putting on great events such as the food festival pre pandemic and the Christmas Tree and Carol Singing last year.

"The improvements in GWR park over the last few years has been wonderful to see and the investment in the Cambria Bridge Recreation Area has turned a run-down no-go area into a cherished space for families.

"It would be an honour to be able to join you as a Parish Council and be able to dedicate time to helping the Parish Council continue to be a valued institution in the area. In these difficult times the Parish is a shining beacon of hope and I hope I can be part of the future of shaping our area. I humbly request that you support me in this co-option and thank you for your time.”
