Swindon Borough Council is highlighting its commitment to stopping smoking in the borough, including by teaching young residents about the risks of both smoking and vaping.
"This two-week multi-agency programme, organised 's Youth Engagement Team, provided year six students with life-like scenarios to enhance their personal safety knowledge.
"Through interactive sessions, including smoking and vaping awareness led by the Council’s Public Health team, children were empowered to make informed choices, supporting our ongoing pledge to protect young people."
These support the pledge the council re-signed last year on the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control, which pledges to:
- Protect children and prevent young people from taking up smoking and vaping
- Support a smoke-free environment
- Communicate hope and increase quit attempts
- Reduce the availability and access to illegal tobacco and illegal nicotine vaping products in the community
Residents are also encouraged to take part in Stoptober, a national campaign that has helped over 2.5 million people make an attempt to quit.
The spokesperson added: "If you or someone you know would like support to quit smoking, please contact Swindon’s local stop smoking service at [email protected]."
People can also visit Sanford House in College Street for drop-in clinics every Wednesday from 9.30am to 10.30am and 2pm to 4pm, with no appointment needed. Free advice and quitting tools are available on the NHS website.
