The crafting group, Swindon Big Knit, have donated a large amount of handmade hats and scarves to local charities and community organisations in the town.

Swindon Big Knit meet at the Orbital Park Customer Service Hub (the round glass building opposite the library) usually to gather and knit and crochet blankets for the homeless and vulnerable in the town.

The group make a number of handmade items, all from donated and preloved yarn of all shades and thicknesses.

The group said they have gone slightly off-piste this month, as the cold has set in this January. Instead of just making its usual blankets, the group have been making hats and scarves to donate to people in need.

The group put a plea out on their Facebook page informing people that they planned to make hats to give away and they said they were surprised when they received multiple replies asking if they could make and donate.

Tracey Major the group's coordinator said: “It was so wonderful for people to get involved and make woolly hats to give away. Woolly donations came flooding in and the hats and scarves were beautifully made.”

Over 140 hats and scarves were donated to the Swindon Hub and several hats will be delivered to other charities in the town.

The Swindon Hub is a community cafe that promote local crafts and have various events on throughout the year.  They have taken the donations from Big Knit, which were all wrapped up with a 'loving handmade message.'

Tracey Major added: “It was so lovely dropping off the hats and scarves to the various charities and they were greatly received. It’s so important to keep warm, and it’s been such a pleasure to help. I have been so overwhelmed by other people’s responses to help too.”

Swindon Big Knit will return to making blankets again now, and they will be meeting upstairs at the Orbital Park Customer Service Hub on Saturday 11 February 2023, from 2.30 pm.

Tracey said: "Everyone is welcome to come along and join us. You’ll get a cuppa and it’s a warm space. We’d love to see you there."
