Swindon Area Green Party has endorsed a proposal and design for a new flag for Swindon.

The party says the design represents the town and its history.

The politically neutral flag, which has been designed by local resident Torin Clements, aims to capture the essence of Swindon’s achievements and origins and is inspired by the town's motto, Salubritas et industria (‘Health and industry’).

It incorporates blue and white chevrons, with the blue inspired by the RAF roundel which featured on Supermarine Spitfires built at South Marston and the white inspired by the GWR Medical Fund, which served as an inspiration for the creation of the NHS.

Both Torin and the Swindon Greens would like to see the design officially adopted by Swindon Borough Council.

Torin said: “I’m delighted that the Swindon Greens have endorsed my flag design. A host of cities, towns, and villages across the country have flags that add to their place’s identity and unique character, complementing national and regional flags.

"If Swindon Borough Council was to adopt my design as Swindon’s official flag, it would be a great opportunity to create an enhanced sense of pride in our town.”

The flag is designed to complement the green-and-white-striped ‘Bustard’ county flag of Wiltshire, with the blue, white, and gold of the proposed Swindon flag mimicking the colour scheme of Swindon’s coat of arms.

The four chevrons on the proposed flag represent the four largest hills in Swindon (Highworth, Old Town, Barbury, and Liddington), while the flag’s emblem is a stylised gold steam-locomotive driving wheel, representing Swindon’s railway heritage.

Swindon Greens’ Bradley Williams said: “With the volatility and disruption we’ve seen in society and politics over the last few years, it can be easy to overlook examples of local creativity and pride in the places we live.

"This flag represents the best of Swindon and its history and its adoption would give our town a much-needed boost.”
