For many years the 73-year-old has been a regular player of golf and bowls, but worsening eyesight in his left eye meant that he was slicing his shots and struggling to see where the bowls were ending up.

His optician told him he had a fast-developing cataract in his left eye, so he chose sight specialists at Newmedica Gloucester to remove it.

The pandemic causing a backlog of surgery for eye operations and other procedures on the NHS, meant Will facied a waiting list of more than a year.

He was told that eye clinic Newmedica Gloucester Brighouse was assisting the NHS with its waiting lists – and within two months Will was having an operation there to remove the cataract that would otherwise have led to continued deterioration of the sight in his left eye.

Will is now playing sports to the best of his ability again and said he’d advise anyone feeling nervous about such an operation to go for it.

He added: ‘When I went to the clinic they talked me through the procedure to reassure me. The surgery was over very quickly and I felt fine. It was all painless. My sight now is really good – so people who are frightened of the procedure shouldn’t be. You don’t even know they’re doing it.

"I’ve heard people say, “I value my sight too much to let anyone operate on my eyes.” But that doesn’t make sense. If they really valued their vision, they’d let a surgeon operate on them and save their sight. Your sight gives you so much pleasure in life. I have three grandchildren and I will now be able to see them grow up and their children grow up.

"With golf, your left eye sees the ball dropping, but because of my cataract I couldn’t see this. People had to show me where the ball landed. I was also slicing the ball, but since my eye’s been operated on I’m fine. I’m playing well and enjoying life to the full again."

As well as cataract removal, Newmedica Gloucester Brighouse’s specialist staff say they provide YAG laser treatment, vitreoretinal surgery, oculoplastic surgery, glaucoma and retinal treatment.

Rachel Tunnicliff, the clinic’s Lead Theatre Nurse, said: "Mr Glass is an active man who wanted to continue being active, so to hear about his positive experience with us is wonderful.

"Testimonies like his show that although many people may fear such an operation, the reality isn’t frightening at all and can make such a significant difference to their lives."
