Sofiia, Ukrainian refugee, has spoken of her experiences volunteering with the Old Town Business Association after coming to Swindon in April 2025.
After arriving in an unfamiliar country, the a lack of friends along with a mix of difficulties and confusion left Sofiia feeling very alone.
She said: "Thankfully I met one great Ukrainian woman, Tetiana, who is a mother of two adorable kids. She has had more than her fair share of hardships and, like many, gave up her routine life and started from scratch.
“She suggested that I take part in some amazing events with the Old Town Business Association, which were held between 1 and 8 June. Her personal story of how volunteering impacted her life and opened her to new opportunities really inspired me, so I agreed.
“And do you know what I realised? Volunteering is not only about helping others, it is also the opportunity to feel valued and needed. It is a good chance to be part of something bigger than myself.
“During that week, I experienced firsthand how various cultures and traditions intertwined. I tried delectable food, which really surprised me because some of it I had never tasted before. I was lucky enough to enjoy real Italian gelato! I saw performances by different and talented people, who told stories of their history through dances and songs. What they shared on stage was truly spine-tingling. I also had the chance to watch traditional African dances, listen to jazz, and enjoy outstanding songs by a Ukrainian choir.
“What struck me the most was that anyone who wished could take part in the dancing and singing to connect more deeply with other cultures. I attended a fascinating lecture by skilled individuals, who have their own channel featuring various captivating podcasts. They came to Swindon to speak about a very important topic nowadays – cybersecurity.
“I met incredible people. In particular, I want to tell you about my new friend Daniella, an inspiring girl who is a content creator and a true artist in what she does. I’m really happy to have met like-minded people, whose stories truly impressed me. This all made me understand that volunteering is not only meaningful, but also a lot of fun.
“I really want to express my gratitude to the Old Town Business Association for their support and for the opportunity to be a small part of their dedicated team. I’m deeply thankful for this remarkable experience, which gave me good memories and wonderful friends.
“The last thing I want to say: do not be afraid to change your life today. Engage in helpful actions, because they can create new avenues for personal growth.”
