In the Government’s daily briefing, Prime Minister Boris Johnson personally thanked the 405,000 people who have signed up in 24 hours to volunteer with the NHS in England.
This comes after The Government announced a recruitment drive to help the vulnerable during the coronavirus crisis on Tuesday evening.
The helpers are needed for a range of needs from delivering food and medicines, driving patients to appointments and even phoning the isolated.
It recruitment drive is one of a number aimed at relieving pressure on the stretched NHS and targets the 1.5 million people with underlying health conditions who have been asked to shield themselves from the virus by staying at home for 12 weeks.
The target of the scheme was 250,000 volunteers and it is hoped the scheme will be replicated in Wales as well.
