Whitehill Way repairs to begin

Repair work on a main road linking West Swindon to the M4 will begin later this week.

Swindon Borough Council will repair deteriorating sections of Whitehill Way to improve the road surface for motorists and increase the lifespan of the carriageway.

From Thursday, 17 Nov, subject to the completion of the waterproofing works taking place on Wootton Bassett Road, the council’s contractors will begin addressing the issues between Fiveways and Withymead roundabouts, completing concrete repairs, patching and resurfacing works.

The work is part of a three-week programme of road repairs along Whitehill Way, stretching from Withymead roundabout at the junction with Mead Way through to Blagrove roundabout.

The council’s contractor will use a combination of temporary traffic lights and road closures throughout the work, and motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys as delays are expected.

The first phase will involve making concrete repairs to the section of Whitehill Way between the Fiveways and Eastleaze roundabouts. The road will remain open under temporary traffic lights, which will stay in place over the weekend for safety reasons.

From Monday, 21 Nov, the Council’s contractor will undertake concrete repairs, patching and resurfacing works on Whitehill Way and Withymead roundabout using a combination of temporary 24-hour road closures and night-time closures.

This will involve:

- Temporary 24-hour road closure of Whitehill Way between Fiveways and Eastleaze roundabouts

- Temporary night-time closure of Whitehill Way between, and including, Eastleaze and Withymead roundabouts

- Temporary night-time road closure of Whitehill Way between Gainsborough and Tewkesbury Cross roundabouts

The overnight closures will be in place between 7pm and 7am and drivers are advised to seek alternative routes.

The third and final phase of work is scheduled to get underway from Monday, 28 November for five days and will see further patching and resurfacing work being carried out on various sections of Whitehill Way. Whitehill Way will be closed overnight from 7pm to 7am from Blagrove roundabout to Withymead roundabout.

Residential access will be maintained during the work, which will be subject to weather conditions, and signed diversions will be in place.

Cllr Kevin Parry, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Highway Maintenance, said: “I’m really pleased we are able to carry out this work because anyone who uses Whitehill Way will know there are sections which are in urgent need of repair.

“This is the latest in a number of highway improvement schemes which are taking place across the borough to improve our roads for local residents and motorists.

“As Whitehill Way is an important route through West Swindon towards the M4, this work will cause inevitable disruption, particularly when the road is closed at various points. 

"It is therefore important motorists allow extra time for their journeys or plan alternative routes if they can over the next three weeks while the work is carried out.”
