A nationwide call for pregnant women to take up the offer of whooping cough vaccination has been endorsed by Swindon Borough Council.

With the number of cases of Whooping Cough remaining high across the country, medical experts say it is important for pregnant women to take up the offer of a whooping cough vaccination.

Whooping cough is highly contagious and can be very serious for newborn babies, potentially leading to their having to be treated in hospital.

The first signs of are like those of a cold, followed by symptoms including:

- Intense coughing

- Difficulty breathing after coughing

- Thick mucus and vomiting

- A distinctive 'whoop' sound - although this sound is not always made by babies and adults.

A council spokesperson said: "By having the vaccine, pregnant women can protect their newborn babies in their first few weeks of life."
